Announcements:
Fall 2020
Buffalo State College is planning to safely restart on-campus operations this fall with a mix of in-person, hybrid, and online courses. Many classes that can be effectively delivered 100 percent online will remain remote to help reduce density on campus. Course schedules will be finalized and posted to Banner in late July.
While classes will begin as scheduled on Monday, August 31, we will conclude in-person instruction before the Thanksgiving holiday and finish the final three weeks of the fall semester (including final exams) exclusively online. To accommodate these changes, fall recess will be canceled.

Faculty Pick
Sumanlata Ghosh is an adjunct faculty member in the Data Science and Analytics program. She selected the article "Understanding deep learning requires rethinking generalization" to share with the DSA and PACM students. See her summary below.
The author in his paper has tried to explain by experiments that explicit regularization may improve generalization when perfectly tuned but it by no means explains adequately the reason behind generalization in neural networks nor is it the sole reason for generalization. Continue summary

June was Pride Month.
In recognition of Pride last month we are featuring Destination Pride as a dashboard in our Data Now segment. Destination Pride is an interactive dashboard where you can search locations around the world and see a score based on how LGBTQ+ friendly they are. Each destination is given a score based on 6 characteristics; marriage equality, sexual activity laws, gender identity protections, anti-discrimination laws, civil rights & liberties, and social media sentiment.

Fighting Racism with Data
Black Lives Matter protests have exploded across the country and the world for the past few weeks, in acknowledgment of the significance of this movement we are featuring a collection of charts from W.E.B. Du Bois. Du Bois was a historian, sociologist, and prominent civil rights activist who created a collection of hand-drawn infographics illustrating racism and inequality of black people in post-Civil War America, 120 years ago. Julia Coccia '16
How did your experience in PACM help you find your first job?: I would say the SAS classes were a huge help as my internship utilized SAS. The Markov chains class gave me a wonderful project to reference when I was interviewing. Any of the regression classes, I used regression techniques in multiple projects. The business classes I took also prepared me for the professional side of my career. How to interview, resume building and the importance of networking.
What did you enjoy most about Buffalo?: Buffalo will always be a second home. There is just something special about it that makes you forget how terrible the winters are. There are great restaurants and many places to explore.

DSA and PACM courses are continually adapted to remain up-to-date and incorporate current industry trends. An example of this can be see in the ACM 600-602 course which was originally developed by Dr. Saziye Bayram and was taught in Spring 2020.
This course involved mathematical models and their applications in various disciplines. Due to COVID 19, the second half of the course was taught remotely and

incorporated mathematical models from epidemiology to study COVID 19.
Students, together with Dr. Bayram, studied compartmental models (SIR, modified SIR models) together with real-time data and data analysis. The real-world relevance of this course became obvious when media current coverage included mathematical model results, students now understood how those results were developed and obtained.

PACM & DSA 2020 Virtual Commencement

The first PACM and DSA virtual commencement occurred on Saturday May 16th. We are so proud of all the graduates and are especially excited to announce the first ever graduating class of Data Science and Analytics. Congratulations 2020 graduates!
