Since the completion of the Human Genome Project – and the ensuing proliferation of inexpensive and rapid DNA sequencing technologies – there has been a monumental surge in the generation of human genomic data. Students who complete the Data Science and Analytics Master of Science program and select genomics related electives can become genomic data scientists who can process and analyze genomic data sets and who can also leverage such data analyses to gain insights into the corresponding biological and pathological processes and test novel hypotheses about human development, health and disease.
Rigorous instruction in bioethics is a cornerstone of the program. Students will develop an understanding of the nature and application of core bioethical principles with an emphasis on the moral, social, political, and legal ramifications of genomics research. Upon completion, graduates will have a principled framework for making conscientious and ethical decisions throughout their careers.
The curriculum includes courses math, statistics, and computer science but also includes gaining hands-on experience analyzing and interrogating real-world genomics data sets through an internship with Roswell Park.
The DSA program with an internship in genomics is created and implemented in collaboration with Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center.
Students interested in genomics will complete the courses in the DSA curriculum and will complete their internship at Roswell Park.
BIO 587 BIOINFORMATICS
BIO 670 ADVANCED BIOSTATISTICAL ANALYSIS
Students will complete a research experience at Roswell Park in the lab of Dr. Kevin Eng.
Research in the Eng Lab focuses on understanding the genetic causes and potential treatment of ovarian cancer. They work with cancer cells and animal models in the laboratory to generate data and we turn these observations into mathematical and statistical models. Combined with Data Science, these models lead to algorithms that predict which women will relapse and how their tumor will have changed as it evolves in response to treatment. A long-term goal is to develop an algorithm that can anticipate resistance and deliver an effective treatment strategy.
Students will have the opportunity to work in small teams on well-specified machine learning tasks: for example, predicting response to therapy, discriminating between tumor clones, organizing genome scale libraries of features from our bench experiments.
The Data Science and Analytics MS with an internship in genomics is designed for individuals with quantitative talent, scientific background, and an entrepreneurial mindset. Student immediate engage in advanced coursework, therefore a background in biology, chemistry, mathematics and programming is required to be successful.
See DSA program pre-requisites.
Students wishing to complete genomics elective must have also completed:
