ABOUT

• Professor Mix teaches: Geospatial Programming, Advanced Topics in GIS, Interactive and Web-based Mapping, Open Big Data for Public Administrators, Transportation Planning, and Sustainable Transportation.
• Dr. Mix’s recent research interestsfocused on using open source programs and data for geospatial analysis.  Her Python web page provides examples of the coding and mapping applications that she has created for her students.  In addition, she has been adapting the National Institute of Justice’s Information and Geospatial Technologies Center of Excellence training for the Crime Mapping and Analysis Program as online courses using either ESRI’s ArcGIS or QGIS.  Introduction to Crime Mapping and Intermediate Crime Mapping will be offered through Blackboard.  Examples of some of the video lectures and QGIS exercises may be see here. Dr. Mix is also applying machine learning approaches to analyze poverty characteristics and travel choices and programming an iterative approach to reduce the impact of sampling error in Census estimates.  Dr. Mix has supported the campus effort to create an interdisciplinary unit for the study of data analytics. Faculty from Computer Information Systems, Mathematics, and Economics, Business and other disciplines have come together to recognize the importance of data science in education.
